Sr. Emanuela Edwards, Head of the Didactic Office at the Vatican Museums, highlights the importance of evangelization through educational programs and family-friendly initiatives. “Part of the work of evangelization is to open the Vatican Museums to as many visitors as we can, but also in the educational programs that we do and the programs for families, whoever comes into the museum, they're touched in some way by the Gospel message,” she notes.

She further emphasizes, “The Holy Fathers for centuries have created this wonderful collection, and it needs to be used in the service of the Gospel and also of mankind.”

The "Capture Nature" Tour: A Family-Centered Experience

In alignment with this mission, the Vatican Museums have launched the "Capture Nature" tour in the Vatican Gardens, offering a new, family-friendly experience. Families can explore the serene atmosphere of the Pope's Gardens, where the gentle rustling of cycads and other natural sounds heighten their connection to God's creation.

For Paola Nuccetelli, a mother participating in the tour, this guided experience not only introduces families to the natural beauty of the Vatican Gardens but also serves as a spiritual journey. She believes, “It’s a step closer to God, discovering how He created such beautiful things!”

Inspired by Pope Francis' 2015 encyclical Laudato Si', the tour emphasizes the importance of caring for God's creation, with a particular focus on educating children ages six to twelve.

A Unique Approach to Learning Through Play

Sr. Emanuela explains the tour's purpose: “We wanted to, for the first time, dedicate an actual tour to families, giving them activities to do, and we tied it to the wonderful encyclical written by Pope Francis, Laudato Si'. It seemed like an invitation to come into the garden to engage in exciting activities for families, while also discussing the themes the Holy Father touched upon.”

Every Saturday, families can enjoy a two-hour adventure led by expert educators through the Vatican’s lush “green lung.” The itinerary includes visits to the Biblical Garden, the English Garden, and various fountains. What makes this tour stand out is its interactive format, featuring activities such as treasure hunts, identifying biblical plants, and exploring the "Wood Wide Web."

Connecting with Faith Through Nature

Romina Zicca, a mother of two young children, shares the profound impact of bringing her family to the Vatican Museums. She reflects, “Contemplating what God has created, everything we look at and find joy in, reflects the breath of God, the thought of God. When one is immersed in nature, one inevitably draws closer to God.”

Following the guided tour, families are encouraged to reflect on God's creation and continue exploring the Vatican Museums, where they can witness the Church’s historical treasures and deepen their spiritual connection.
