As the first light of dawn illuminates the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, the patron saint of animals and creation, the historic town begins to stir. Soon, the quiet streets will be filled with pilgrims gathering for a symbolic walk to celebrate the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation.
This pilgrimage is inspired by the Orthodox Church's call for Christians to observe Creation Day on September 1 and is further strengthened by Pope Francis' message for this year’s celebration, titled "Hope and Act with Creation.”
A Journey of Hope and Simplicity
Domenico Sorrentino, Bishop of Assisi, reflected, “Christian hope is not a hope that merely waits for things to happen from afar. Christian hope sets our lives in motion.” The pilgrimage, blessed by Bishop Sorrentino, was organized by the Diocese of Assisi, the Laudato Si’ Movement, and other groups. It began at the Sanctuary of the Spoliation, where St. Francis famously stripped himself of all material possessions, marking the beginning of his life dedicated to simplicity and care for all creation.
From this sacred spot, the route leads to Gubbio, a town known for its association with St. Francis’ taming of the fierce wolf—a powerful symbol of reconciliation with nature.
Living the Call to Care for Creation
Families with children, pilgrims walking with their pets, and even some accompanied by wolves—all embodied the pilgrimage’s theme of active hope. They were living out the call to care for our common home, demonstrating that the journey is not just symbolic but a lived expression of stewardship.
“Here, he stripped himself of everything, down to his nakedness,” explained Bishop Sorrentino. “This act symbolized Francis' new life, no longer tied to money and material possessions, but a life of connection to God and his brothers, bound by love.” Following this gesture, the bishop blessed him, wrapped him in his cloak, and Francis began his journey to Gubbio, the first step of his life as a convert.
The Season of Creation: A Call to Action
The pilgrimage, marking the Day of Prayer for Creation, is just the beginning. It opens the month-long "Season of Creation," an ecumenical initiative running from September 1 to October 4. This global effort invites Christians to engage in activities that promote ecological stewardship and deepen their relationship with creation.
