The second Vatican assembly of the global Synod on Synodality commenced on Wednesday, October 2nd, bringing together clerics and laypeople for nearly a month of in-depth discussions on the future of the Catholic Church.

The event began with a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Square at 9:30 a.m., followed by the first working session in the afternoon. Pope Francis opened the session with a warm greeting, setting the tone for the assembly’s key focus: listening to the Holy Spirit and embracing a synodal Church.
What is the Synod on Synodality?
Launched by Pope Francis in October 2021, the Synod on Synodality is a global, multiyear process designed to foster a deeper sense of unity and shared mission within the Catholic Church. Catholics worldwide were asked to submit feedback on the question: “What steps does the Spirit invite us to take in order to grow in our journeying together?”
The process has already passed through diocesan, national, and continental stages, culminating in the first global assembly at the Vatican in 2023. The current October 2024 assembly is the second and final global gathering, marking the conclusion of the discernment phase of the synod.
Pope Francis' Vision: A Journey with the Spirit
Pope Francis has consistently emphasized that the Synod on Synodality is not a political assembly but a spiritual journey. “It is a journey in accordance with the Spirit, not a parliament for demanding rights and claiming needs in accordance with the agenda of the world, nor an occasion for following wherever the wind is blowing, but the opportunity to be docile to the breath of the Holy Spirit,” the Pope has said, reiterating the central role of prayer and discernment.
Key Themes and Questions
The 2024 Instrumentum Laboris serves as the guiding document for the assembly, building on the work of the 2023 session. The document centers on three major questions:
- How can we be more fully a sign and instrument of union with God and of the unity of all humanity?
- How can we better share gifts and tasks in the service of the Gospel?
- What processes, structures, and institutions are needed in a missionary synodal Church?
These questions form the foundation for discussing how the Church can adopt a more synodal approach to governance, theology, and mission, and how it can discern doctrinal matters more effectively.
Public Sessions and Themes
In addition to the internal discussions, the synod will feature four public events: two on October 9th and two more on October 16th. These sessions will explore key themes such as:
- “The People of God, Subject of Mission”
- “The Role and Authority of the Bishop in a Synodal Church”
- “The Mutual Relationship Between the Local Church and the Universal Church”
- “The Exercise of Primacy and the Synod of Bishops”
These discussions will take place at institutes near St. Peter’s Square, offering a rare public glimpse into the synodal process.
Next Steps: From Discernment to Implementation
As the October 2024 assembly concludes the discernment phase, the next phase of the Synod on Synodality will shift toward implementing the insights and decisions made during the synodal journey. This will shape the future of the Church’s mission and governance, rooted in synodality.
