From September 8 to 15, 2024, Quito, Ecuador will be the host city for the 53rd International Eucharistic Congress (IEC). This significant event not only brings together participants from around the world but also commemorates the 150th anniversary of Ecuador's consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

To gain insights into the preparations for this occasion, we sat down with Fr. Livingston Olivares, the President of the Communications Commission for IEC 2024. Fr. Olivares expressed his enthusiasm for this international event, emphasizing its significance as a blessing for Latin America.

As the representatives of the Pontifical committee in Rome overseeing the Congress, Fr. Olivares highlighted the tireless efforts of various commissions working diligently to ensure its success. These commissions, including the theological, liturgical, and communications commissions, collaborate to create a transformative experience centered around the Eucharist.

The role of the communications commission is particularly crucial, as communication serves as a means of evangelization. Fr. Olivares emphasized the power of the Eucharist to foster unity and fruitful outcomes, expressing the importance of effectively conveying this message through various communication channels.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by some Latin American countries, such as restrictions on public displays of the Blessed Sacrament, Fr. Olivares highlighted the Church's solidarity with those affected. He emphasized the Church's role in accompanying and supporting people through prayer, acts of solidarity, and Caritas initiatives. In times of social unrest and great social problems, Fr. Olivares encouraged individuals to draw closer to the Blessed Sacrament, reminding them that Jesus is present, offering solace and guidance.

In his message to viewers facing difficulties, Fr. Olivares invoked the disciples of Emmaus, who experienced discouragement but were ultimately encouraged and accompanied by Jesus. He invited everyone to recognize the importance of the Eucharist as a source of strength and rest, even amidst fatigue and unrest. Fr. Olivares extended an invitation to approach the Eucharist, where God can be encountered in prayer and where the presence of Jesus assures us of His accompaniment and reminds us of our identity as children of God.
